TRANSIT's History

TRANSIT, a multi-ethnic and multi-generational, expressionist dance company, was formed in 1995, by M. Koob and Kathleen Moore. The company was created with the commitment of creating new and thoughtful work, rooted in Koob's training under Hellmut Gottschild, Mary Wigman's last assistant prior to her death.

TRANSIT’s artistic heritage is rooted in German Expressionist dance. Through performance and education, the company applies the approach of this movement to the issues and ideas of today.

Previous works by TRANSIT have been performed at the NPG/ODC Theater to sold out houses during Summerfests '95 and '96. TRANSIT has also performed to SRO houses at 848 Community Space in 1995. We have performed as guest artists/guest choreographer for Asian American Dance Performances during their Angel Island Series in May of 1996 at Dancers Group Studio Theater. The company has been produced by The San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Dance Festival in 1997 at Brady Street Dance Centre and in 1998 at Dancers' Group Studio Theater. Since January 1999, TRANSIT has been self-producing concerts at Dance Mission and Studio 210 and EXIT Theatre to exuberant audiences.

In 1999 TRANSIT and Jeanne-Marie Hughes, in association with City College of San Francisco created "The Working Series", with the mission of presenting experimental work by established and emerging choreographers.

Seeing the opportunity to support grass root social agencies and build on our audiences Koob created The Benefit Project, which donates 100% of a performance's box office receipts to a small non-profit. TRANSIT/The Benefit Project has performed in and produced benefit concerts in collaboration with New College of California for various health and human welfare agencies. These benefit performances sell out to audiences of the agencies supporters, many of whom are new to dance.

The Benefit Project has been recognized for it's work in San Francisco by the Mayor's office, resulting in an official proclamation declaring January 8, 1997 TRANSIT/The Benefit Project Day.

TRANSIT has worked diligently to expand our audience beyond the traditional modern dance audience and bring Mary Wigman's tradition to new viewers and performers.
